From the Pastors
Last month while I was in Atlanta taking a seminary class for my doctoral program, I heard some interesting comments about Mennonites.
The seminary I attend is Presbyterian. You probably know that Presbyterians, along with other mainline denominations such as the Methodists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, and others, no longer have the kind of political and cultural influence that they had 40 years ago. Consequently mainline Christians now feel powerless and marginalized.
Throughout the course, we heard from a variety of professors who would come in and lecture for a day. During their lectures, two of these faculty members mentioned Mennonites without knowing that one was present in class. The gist of their comments was that ``We in the mainline churches have something important to learn from Mennonites. We are now living on the edge of American society, without the kind of power and influence that we used to have. But this is a great opportunity for us to become a different kind of church. Mennonites have been a different kind of church for over 450 years, living on the edge of society and witnessing to a better way. We should look to Mennonites for clues about how to be a church that is counter-cultural and offers the world an alternative way of life.''
The seminary's interest in Mennonites goes beyond polite talk. One of the preaching professors has just published a book that shows how pastors can use radical reformation ethics to craft sermons that help congregations form an identity set apart from American culture.
I came back home from Atlanta wondering whether God has entrusted us Mennonites with a profoundly important gift which other Christians deeply want: the gift of living on the edge of society and from that edge witnessing to the alternate reality of God's rule in the world.

From the Pastors
In your church mailbox you will find a paper from the elders entitled ``Testing Two Clusters as a Way to Remain One Congregation and Create More Space.'' Additional copies are available on the literature rack.
The elders will be hosting a meeting at the church on Wednesday, January 8, at 7:00 PM for you to talk more about this idea. Everyone is invited to this meeting, including our young people. The role of the elders during this meeting will be to listen.
The elders are profoundly grateful to God that even though we have just begun looking at various options for creating more space, a high degree of agreement already exists in the congregation. At least 85% of us, and perhaps 90% of us, agree that we want to stay together as one congregation. Consequently the elders propose that from now on, we only look at options that allow us to remain one.
The elders are also profoundly grateful for the vision statement which our congregation unanimously approved in 1998. This vision statement will be greatly useful as we all explore the moving of the Holy Spirit among us.
If you have questions, concerns, or advice about any of this, you are welcome to talk to one of the elders, whose names are printed at the end of this
Newsletter .

From the Pastors: How Full Are We?
It's wonderful to have a full church building! Every Sunday this fall, we've been blessed not only with each other, but also with lots of visitors, some of whom are searching for a new church to settle in and call home.
When they visit us, these visitors are evaluating how friendly we are, how meaningful the worship service is, how good the preaching is, if there are other people here with whom they can fellowship, and whether they sense God at work among us.
They are also evaluating whether or not there is space for them in this congregation. Literally. They look around our building and ask: ``Is there a spot for me to park my car? Does the meetingroom have enough seats for my family and me? Are there empty chairs waiting for me and my children in the classrooms? When the congregation has a meal, are there enough places at the tables for me to sit?''
The question, of course, is what constitutes ``enough space.'' For many years now, researchers have been trying to answer that question. Exactly when does a church become ``full''?
Again and again, researchers find that a church building is full when it has reached 80 percent of its capacity. Another way of saying this is that a church will
not grow numerically beyond 80 percent of its seating capacity. (See Ervin Stutzman's book, Welcome: A Biblical and Practical Guide to Receiving New Members , published by Herald Press, 1990, p. 81.)
Church growth specialists also advise congregations to ignore attendance figures during the summer months when most people take vacations. In other words, the average attendance from September to May is what counts.
Since September 8, the first Sunday after Labor Day, our average worship attendance has been 198. Because we have 230 chairs in the meeting room,
our attendance is now at 86 percent of capacity, which means we are full. If the researchers are right, most visitors will not feel that BAMF has room for them. They won't feel very welcome!
Our commissions have been hard at work this fall to make more room for new people, but virtually everything is now filled. Consider:
·         The Worship Commission has added 30 chairs and 30 hymnals to the meetingroom. Any further chairs would have to be set up in the fellowship hall during worship.
·         The Stewardship and Finance Commission, along with the trustees, have painted new lines on the parking lot to add 12 parking spaces and have encouraged as many of us who can to park on the grass along the north side of the lot. But beyond this, we have no more parking.
·         The Christian Education Commission has put the largest children's classes in larger rooms, and the smallest classes in smaller rooms. Jubilee Hall is used for the gathering/music time and for the Middler class. With the 78 children and young people who regularly attend and with the 16 teachers added in, 94 people now fill our children's wing. The commission feels it has maxed out the available space for children. In adult Sunday School, classes fill the four corners of the meetingroom, as well as the library and the front office. Dan has rearranged his office to create space for another Sunday school class and for committee meetings.
·         For carry-in meals, the Fellowship and Caring Commission fills the fellowship hall with all available round tables, seating only 128 people, or 70 people less than our average attendance. In other words, only 65 percent of us can sit down to eat together. One option is to set up more tables somewhere else, such as the meetingroom, Jubilee hall, or the library.
·         Because of the issues of Sunday School, parking, and fellowship hall space, the elders did not include the ``two-worship-services-with-Sunday-School-in-between'' option on the straw poll. That particular option would not help with these other space issues. In addition, the logistics of the meetingroomworshipping, setting up for Sunday School, and then setting
up for worship againwould be difficult to negotiate each Sunday.
In mysterious wayswhich we may not fully understandGod is sending a wonderful collection of visitors to Berkey, some of whom will one day become fellow members in our congregation.
Perhaps our most important mission is to do a good job of welcoming these people, offering them space and giving them a spiritual home.

Christian Peacemaker Teams announces a new initiative to allow believers in peace from North America (or anywhere) to address simple notes to members of armed groups in Colombia, especially in the township of Cienaga del Opon, where the team maintains an accompanying presence with the civilian population. The goal is to deliver short, personal letters or children's peace pictures. The Colombia team comes across members of armed groups in the course of its work and is looking for ways to initiate dialogue concerning non-violent ways to deal with conflict. Each letter should be a simplenot condescendingreminder to its reader that she/he is a child of God with a message of hope arising from that truth. A sample letter (English and Spanish versions) is posted on the bulletin board.

From the Pastors:
During the next quarter of the church year, a new Sunday school class will begin on December 8, an intergenerational class that will be hosted by the MYF. The curriculum to be used is called, appropriately enough, ``Bridges,'' and its purpose is to facilitate conversation and learning between the generations.
How fitting! The Bible reminds us that each generation has gifts to offer the other generations. In the books of Joel and Acts, young and old women and men dream dreams, see visions, and receive the gift of the Spirit poured out for the benefit of the whole communitythe whole ``church family.'' A conversation among all generations benefits the spiritual health of our congregation and each of us in it.
For more information about signing up for this class (enrollment is limited), look in the ``From the Commissions'' section of this newsletter.

Just how many have been coming to worship this fall? During the six Sundays since September 8, our attendance has averaged 204 peoplewhich is an average of 35 more people than the same period a year ago. We thank God for this gift.

``The worship experience for each of us is enhanced in a variety of ways: music, visuals, stories, message, touch, drama, and prayer. The Worship Commission and pastors work to utilize all these areas as venues to communicate our faith and bring us closer to God in our worship service. A year ago Visual Arts was added to the worship team, and I was excited that this area would be thought about purposefully. I have received several responses indicating that the visual arts has enriched the Sunday morning experience here. I have hope for a broad range of congregational involvement because, as in all these areas of worship, different individuals bring uniqueness and variety to a given activity. Ideally, I would like to have a number of individuals throughout the year to be responsible for our surroundings at the altar…this may be a simple floral arrangement, candles, making a banner, or building a cross. It could be a project for small groups, Sunday school classes (all ages), MYF, Jr. Youth, women's or men's groups, college group, one individual, or partnerships! If you are one of those individuals whose worship experience is enhanced by what you see, then give prayerful thought to serving in this way. I have special need for one more person to help during the Christmas season. I will have a sign up sheet in the fellowship hall for those willing and motivated.'' The trip will take two weeks, and he hopes that others will join him for a couple of miles, a couple of days, or for the entire trip. He will leave Pittsburgh on Monday, October 28 (tomorrow) and arrive at the capitol on Sunday, November 10. He'll be averaging about 17 miles/day and hopes to coordinate a brief service/rally at the trip's completion. Check out his progress, as well as daily stories and scriptures, at www.mph.org/peacewalk.

This journal for congregational leaders is a cooperative effort between Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart and Canadian Mennonite Bible College in Winnipeg. Topics of recent issues have included: confession, communion, hospitality, and transformation. Let me know if you'd like to review any past issues.

Announcements
BAMF News
Lamar Lantz has finished up his work in northern Indiana and is heading east for three weeks of work with Mennonite Disaster Service in North Fork, West Virginia. Afterwards, he'll be heading west and re-joining Anna Mae for retirement in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. (Anna Mae retires this spring from teaching.)          Parents of MYFers , please come to a brief informational meeting regarding LIVE-IN on November 10. We will meet in the MYF room immediately following Sunday school. Sack lunches are optional.         The next Junior Youth activity takes place next Sunday, November 10, 1:30-4:00 p.m. We'll meet at BAMF and carpool to OxBow County Park for an outdoor activity. (Hint: Remember last year at OxBow? Remember camouflaged Tim?) If the weather is bad, we'll be indoors at the meetinghouse, but dress for running (and hiding) in the woods. Parents, please make arrangements to have your son or daughter picked up at OxBow at 4:00 p.m. Need more information? Talk with Doug or Cindy Baker, or call us at 534-4485.          The quilt that was being worked on this summer for the relief sale is at Ruth Hathaway's. You are invited to come and quilt on Thursday evenings, 6:00-9:00 p.m. If you can't quilt on Thursday evenings and would like to come another time, let Ruth know so that arrangements can be made. From the Commissions
From the elders:
Here is our agenda for the November 17 congregational business meeting, which as usual will follow a fellowship meal.
a.       Opening.
b.       Approve minutes of the August 18, 2002 congregational meeting.
c.       Approve proposal for distributing the 2001-2002 budget surplus (Stewardship and Finance Commission) .
d.       Sending mission giving at the beginning of each quarter rather than the end of each quarter (Stewardship and Finance).
e.       Discussion about the results of the straw polls on making space for our growing congregation (Elders).
f.       Discussion about offering financial aid to students who attend non-Mennonite Christian colleges (Christian Education).

From the Christian Education Commission:
Please take a moment to pick up and review the current `` Student Financial Aid Policy'' which you can find on the literature rack. At our congregational meeting in two weeks, we will invite feedback and counsel on these guidelines: whether to expand them or to keep them essentially as they are. Based on the counsel received, the Christian Education Commission will bring a proposal to the congregation at the February meeting.

A Journey to Jerusalem: Walking a path of Nonviolence , December 6-8, is sponsored by MCC US Peace and Justice Ministries in Akron, PA. Over the last several months people have been asking, ``What can I do to witness against the talk of war both in Iraq and the U.S.?'' A Journey to Jerusalem is for those who want to speak truth to power but are not sure how to do it. Training participants will engage in a theological dialogue on nonviolence, learn what it means to live a life of nonviolence, and discover options and develop skills for speaking truth to power. For cost and registration information check on-line at www.mcc.org/journeytojerusalem, call 717-859-3889, or write to JourneyToJersusalemmcc.org.

Community Events
Thanks for your part in the Michiana Relief Sale's Success . Besides coming to the Michiana Relief Sale to buy a beautiful quilt, see friends, or eat good food, the Relief Sale Information-Witness Committee wants to keep visible the motivation of MCC: ``In the Name of Christ.'' If you, young or old, feel strongly about this, please join us and let your interest be known to your congregational MCC representative, Tom Albrecht, or to Ron Kennel, 534-1385.         If you're interested in having a sign in your yard asking that war not be waged in Iraq , please see the poster on the Peace and Justice bulletin board or talk to Ruth Liechty.

The play will run at 8:00 p.m. on November 8, 9, and 16 and at 3:00 p.m. on November 10 and 17 in the Goshen College Umble Center. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. Call 533-7566 for tickets or more information.          The 14 th Annual Goshen Community Alzheimer's Seminar will be addressing ethical dilemmascaregiving, decision-making and communicationon Wednesday, November 13, at the Greencroft Senior Center with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the first session beginning at 9:00 a.m. For more information, see the brochure on the bulletin board.         Hudson Lake Mennonite Church, in collaboration with The Blue Lantern/Whistle Stop, is hosting an evening of Gospel Music on November 17 .
