This morning's prayer service is based on the daily worship of the Taizé Community in France. As a contemplative service, it offers opportunities for silence and individual meditation as well as for corporate prayer. Founded in 1949, the Community seeks to draw people from various Christian denominations to work and worship together. This project began as a reaction to the destruction and despair of World War II, and the Community now hosts thousands of visitors every year, the majority of them young people.

Childcare during worship is available for infants in the nursery (on the right side of the hallway going back to Jubilee Hall) and for toddlers in the MYF room (on the far side of Jubilee Hall).

Passionate Faith
Gathering
         Prelude
         Welcome and Introduction of Visitors
         Call to Worship
Congregational Singing:  Joyful, joyful we adore thee (WB 71)
                                                      Shout to the Lord
                                                      This is my desire
                                                      As the deer
Confessing
O God who is beyond us as well as among us
We confess that we are often half-hearted, secular people who come
to worship out of habit rather than desire.

Fill us with an appetite for Your presence.

We confess that we have not devoted the time and attention to our
spiritual lives that we need in order to find genuine nourishment.

Fill us with an appetite for Your presence.

We confess that we often fail to connect Sunday morning with the
rest of our week. We have missed many opportunities to reflect on
the ethics of Christian discipleship and to act as followers of Jesus.

O God, teach us wisdom and repentance.

We confess that we have sometimes used our skills and our passions
for selfish, shallow, or destructive ends.

O God, teach us wisdom and repentance. Fill us with an appetite for
         Your presence.

``Love and Faithfulness Meet Together''
Just as Christians believe in the mystery of the Incarnationthat Jesus is fully God and fully humanwe also believe that the church, as the Body of Christ, is both universal and particular. Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship is only one small part of the Body of Christ. Our 25 year history has been shaped by fallible Christians who have sometimes struggled to discern and to live out God's will. Yet in our past we have also witnessed to Christ's ``loving, healing, caring presence.'' We have been a place where God's love and Christian faithfulness have met together. May it be so in the future as well! Litany of Response
(by Ruth Liechty)

Leader:  We, Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship, have heard God's call to be Christ's loving, healing, caring Presence.

Voice:
I have called you by name, you are mine. Remember these things, O Berkey Avenue: I formed you, you are my servant. You will not be forgotten by me. I have swept away your sins like mist. I have redeemed you.

Founding Members: From our pastors at Waterford, East Goshen, Yellow Creek, College, North Goshen, and elsewhere we heard God's call in 1979 to form a new congregation in the West Goshen area.

All other current members: During the past 25 years, from various congregations and in various ways, we, too, have heard God's call to be part of Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship.

Children: Through times of worship, study, and fellowship we are hearing God's call. We, too, are part of Berkey Avenue.

Leader:  To be

Voice:
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of God who called you out of darkness into marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people.

All:     We confess that we are still in the process of becoming. We are clay in the Potter's hands, seeking to be pliable that we may be more perfectly formed into the body of Christ. We are seeking to become, individually and corporately, a temple in which you, O Lord, are pleased to dwell.

Leader:  Christ's

Voice:
Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches.

Song:
Thou true vine (WB 373)

Leader:  Loving

Voice:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

All:     We confess, O God, that you and you alone are worthy of our deepest devotion. We confess our desire to love you above all else. We are keenly aware that we are constantly bombarded by many distractions. Yet we are even more aware that loving our neighbor seems the more difficult task.

MYF & YA: Some of our neighbors we just don't like.

Over 50:         Some speak words we can't understand.

Children: Some are dirty.

30 50:         Some have customs that puzzle or offend us.

All:     Transform us by your grace. Wash, cleanse, and indwell us. May we be open channels through which your love can flow to each neighbor you bring to us.

Leader:  Healing. Caring.

Voice:
Loose the bonds of injustice. Let the oppressed go free. Share your bread with the hungry. Bring the homeless poor into your house. Clothe the naked. Remove the yoke, the pointing finger, the speaking of evil. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly.

All:     We confess, Lord, that individually and as a corporate body, we have experienced much woundedness. Through this body we have also experienced healing and renewed hope. You have blessed us with faithful leaders. You have blessed us with a rich diversity of gifts. As wounded healers may we minister healing

Parents:         In our homes.

Leaders:         In our congregations.

Men:     In our neighborhoods.

Women:   In our world.

Leader:  Presence.

Voice:   Lo, I am with you always.

All:     Praise be to you, Almightly God.

Leader:  Called to be Christ's loving, healing, caring presence.

Voice:
I have called you by name, you are mine. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Do not fear or be afraid.

All:     We have heard your call.
                  We have experienced your faithfulness.
         Forgive us when we hesitate
                  and cling to the familiar.
With your promise and your Spirit
we eagerly anticipate the new thing
that you have already begun to do in our midst.
                           Amen.

A Closing Litany of Commitment
(by Ruth Liechty)

Founders: In 1979 we responded to God's call to form a new worshipping community in the West Goshen area. We discerned God's call to be Christ's loving, healing, caring presence to those who choose to join our fellowship, to those in the west Goshen area and beyond this community into the world.

Others:          We thank God and we thank you for your response to God's call. We have experienced Christ's loving, healing caring presence as we have become part of Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship. We have experienced joy as we have shared with you in ministry here, in the community, and beyond this community.

Founders: We renew our commitment to welcome those who come to share in our life as a congregation. We renew our commitment to be Christ's loving, healing caring presence in the West Goshen area and beyond. We remember with gratitude those who shared gifts and ministries with us at various times during the past 25 years. We are grateful for you who have joined this Fellowship and are current members with us.

Others:          We thank you for the welcome you have given us. Together with you we renew our commitment to welcome others whom God will bring to us. With you we renew our commitment to be Christ's loving, healing, caring presence in this congregation, in the West Goshen community, and in the world beyond.

All:     With God's Spirit we joyfully accept the call to be God's own people called out of darkness into marvelous light. We joyfully accept the challenge to be beacons of that light to others; to welcome those who come; to surrender to the new thing God is already beginning in our midst. Praise be to God!

Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship Timeline
(supplemented from the program of the 20 th Anniversary Celebration)

In December 1974, a vision for developing a new Mennonite fellowship in the Goshen area was first voiced by a mission-minded group in the Waterford Mennonite Church.
