Lent 2: The Atonement
GatheringPrelude Gathering Song: We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord (repeat) And we offer up to you the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and we offer up to you the sacrifices of joy. Welcome and Introduction of Guests Songs of Praise: To God be the glory (WB 102) Oh, how happy are they (WB 597) Christ, we do all adore thee (WB 105) Prayer of Confession (Leader reads plain text. Congregation and leader together read bold.) In this season of waiting for resurrection we seek to shed our darkness and be transformed as a people of light. Lord, strip away our masks of darkness. We seek forgiveness for forgetting our identity as your children. As a result of our forgetfulness, we have neglected, rejected, ignored and defiled the relationships we hold with others. Restore us, Lord, to relationships of wholeness. We confess that we have closed our eyes to the needs of our neighbors, turned our ears from the cries of the helpless, and pressed our lips against speaking your message of reconciliation. Open our eyes, ears and lips, that we may share the fullness of life we receive from your sacrifice. We recognize that through your sacrifice we are claimed as daughters and sons of God, and we extend this identity to those around us, naming them as brothers and sisters in your church. We long for renewed relationships, Lord, illuminated in the light of your resurrection. Teach us to live more fully as your children, freely loving and ministering to others as you showed us in your life and sacrifice, through the power of your Spirit. Amen. The forty days echo the forty days of the flood, the forty days spent by Moses and Elijah in the wilderness, Israel's forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the forty days that Ninevah had to repent, and the forty days of Jesus' temptation. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday with a reminder that we are mortal, humans fashioned from dust and returning to dust, and ends with Easter, a celebration of Jesus' resurrection and the promise of eternal life. Lent is a period of reflection, preparation, and often penitence and confession. For some people, Lent includes making a commitment of some sort, either to withhold from something or to begin to do something new and positive. At Berkey Avenue this year, our Lent series will focus on the atoning work of Jesus Christ: How are we saved? The series looks like this: Lent 1: An overview of three historic atonement theories Lent 2: Biblical image of the atonement: Sacrifice Lent 3: Biblical image of the atonement: Reconciliation Lent 4: Biblical image of the atonement: Ransom/ Redemption Lent 5: Biblical image of the atonement: Adoption Lent 6: Biblical image of the atonement: Victory We encourage you in this Lenten season to nurture your relationship with God through Jesus Christ and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Spend time in Bible study, prayer, and contemplation. Consider the ways that you have been touched, healed, saved, reconciled through Jesus. Actively watch and listen for the ways that God continues to work in our world today. And then give thanks. Childcare during worship is available for infants and toddlers (generally aged three and under) in the nursery on the right side of the hallway going back to Jubilee Hall. Nurture Hour begins ten minutes after the end of worship. Adult classes at BAMF are intergenerational and visitors are encouraged to attend the class of their choosing . Groups 1 and 5 meet in the northeast corner of the meetingroom and engage in a sermon response discussion led by Kirk Stiffney and Trish Shenk. Groups 3 and 6 meet in the northwest corner of the meetingroom and discuss The Ragamuffin Gospel, led by Joan Troyer and Dale Snyder. Groups 2 and 7 meet in the southeast corner of the meetingroom and discuss articles from The Mennonite, led by Dan Nafziger, Dan Schrock, and Eric Hostetler.
