Song:   God is here among us (HWB 16)

Introduction to the morning

Call to Worship (responsively)

Left:   God to enfold me,

         God to surround me,

         God in my speaking,

         God in my thinking.

Right: God in my sleeping,

         God in my waking,

         God in my watching,

         God in my hoping.

Left:  God in my life,

         God in my lips,

Right:  God in my soul,

          God in my heart.

Unison:     God in my ever-living soul,

                   And God in my eternity.

Scripture:   Psalm 107:1-9, 43

      Chanted with Alleulia (HWB 101) Sustain the last chord of Alleluia through the chanting of the verses until the next Alleluia.

      O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

      for his steadfast love endures forever.

            Alleluia

      Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,

      those redeemed from trouble

      and gathered in from the lands,

      from the east and from the west,

      from the north and from the south.

            Alleluia

      Some wandered in desert wastes,

      finding no way to an inhabited town;

      hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.

      Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,

      and he delivered them from their distress.

            Alleluia

      The Lord led them by a straight way,

      until they reached an inhabited town.

      Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,

      for his wonderful works to humankind.

      For the Lord satisfies the thirsty,

      And the hungry he fills with good things.

            Alleluia

      Let those who are wise give heed to these things,

      and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

            Alleluia

Songs:  The love of God  (STJ 44)

            Lord God, you love us (see below)

            Oh draw me, Lord (see below)

Prayer (from HWB 746):

            Tender and compassionate God,

                  you long to gather us in your arms

                  as a hen gathers her chicks.

            Draw us to yourself in love,

                  surround us with your grace,

                  and keep us in the shelter of your wings

                              so that in our time of testing

                              we may not fall away.  AMEN

Offering and Offertory

Children’s Time:  Love you forever                           Ruth Hathaway

Song:   Jesus loves me (HWB 341)

Silence

Scripture:  Hosea 11:1-9                                 Dan and Deb Williams

When Israel was a child, I loved him,
   and out of Egypt I called my son.
The more I called them,
   the more they went from me;
they kept sacrificing to the Baals,
   and offering incense to idols.

 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
   I took them up in myarms;
   but they did not know that I healed them.
  I led them with cords of human kindness,
   with bands of love.
  I was to them like those
   who lift infants to their cheeks.
   I bent down to them and fed them.

They shall return to the land of Egypt,
   and Assyria shall be their king,
   because they have refused to return to me.
The sword rages in their cities,
   it consumes their oracle-priests,
   and devours because of their schemes.
  My people are bent on turning away from me.
   To the Most High they call,
   but he does not raise them up at all.

How can I give you up, Ephraim?
   How can I hand you over, O Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
   How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
My heart recoils within me;
   my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my fierce anger;
   I will not again destroy Ephraim;
for I am God and no mortal,
   the Holy One in your midst,
   and I will not come in wrath.

Response:  In God’s arms, we were lifted up,
  but we did not know that God healed us.
  God led us with cords of human kindness,
  with bands of love.
God was to us like those
   who lift infants to their cheeks.
   God bent down to us and fed us.

Prayers of Petition                                     David Heusinkveld, elder

Song:  Through our fragmentary prayers (HWB 347)

   Leader:   Let us pray through Jesus Christ, bringing our need and our praise and our petition to the one who lifts us up and draws us close.

                 For all who share your name, that our divisions may cease, and that all may be one as you and the Father are one, we pray, O Christ.

                 (HWB 347, verse one; offer petitions spoken or sung during the refrain and in the silence following.)

   Leader:   For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples; for the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected; for those in positions of public trust, that they may serve justice and promote your freedom and wholeness, we pray, O Christ.

                 (HWB 347, verse two; offer petitions spoken or sung during the refrain and in the silence following.)

   Leader:   For this congregation, that we may be delivered from hardness of heart and show forth your glory in all that we do; for all who commend themselves to our prayers; for our families, friends, and neighbors; that being freed from what hinders them, they may live in joy, peace, and health, we pray to you, O Christ.

                 (HWB 347, verse three; offer petitions spoken or sung during the refrain and in the silence following.)

   Leader:   For ourselves:  for the forgiveness of our sins and for the grace of the Holy Spirit to amend our lives, we pray to you, O Christ.

                 (HWB 347, verse four; offer petitions spoken or sung during the refrain and in the silence following.)

      All:    For yours is the majesty, O God—Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit—yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and forever. Amen.

Song:   Ubi caritas et amor  (HWB 452)

Luke 22:14-15, 19-20

      When the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table, and the apostles with him.  He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer!"  Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you.  Do this in remembrance of me."  He did the same with the cup after supper saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood."

Prayer of Blessing

Celebrating Communion

      We will gather in small groups around the three tables to partake together.

John 17:20-23

      [Jesus prayed,] "I ask not only on behalf of these [disciples], but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one.  As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."
