More about Today’s Service for Eternity Sunday
Many Mennonites in Europe and Canada observe Eternity Sunday on the last Sunday of the church year. Its themes are the passage and meaning of time, our frailty and mortality, Jesus’ resurrection as the promise of the kingdom and eternal life, the church as the communion of the living and the dead who are in Christ. It does not make a distinction between ‘saints’ and other Christians; its prayers for the dead are ones of thanks not intercession.
Placing the Sunday of the dead at the close of the church year provides an analogy for the end of each person’s life and the end of the world. Since Eternity Sunday takes place immediately before Advent a powerful contrast comes into play between darkness and light, grief and joy.
People who have died live on in our memories. Those who lived well inspire us; those who suffered evoke our respect; those who lived badly warn us.
