Summary

Many of us have complicated relationships with the Bible. Maybe we’ve been taught that it matters, but it ‘s mattered in painful ways — as a weapon, as a weight too heavy to carry, as an oppressive rulebook, and in many other ways that have injured, shamed, or restrained us. We’ve also seen how the Bible has been used to justify completely opposing ends — violence and non-violence, revenge and forgiveness, judgment and mercy, and so on. However, Jesus is God’s Word made flesh, and his disciples were (and are) witnesses to Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Accepting their witness changes how we read the scriptures. How could it not? Reading the Bible through the lens of Jesus, we discover God working in surprising ways both within our world and within us.
